Geofencing: Your Home Knows When You're Coming

The Magic of Location-Based Automation

Imagine arriving home after a long day at work. As you approach your house, the lights turn on, the heating adjusts to your preferred temperature, and your favourite playlist starts playing. You did not press a button, give a voice command, or open an app. Your home just knew you were coming.

This is the power of geofencing — and it is one of the most underutilised features in smart home automation.

How Geofencing Works with Thinka and HomeKit

Apple HomeKit includes built-in geofencing capabilities that use your iPhone's location to trigger automations. When you cross a virtual boundary (the "geofence") around your home, HomeKit can execute any scene or automation you have configured.

Through Thinka, this means your entire KNX system can respond to your location:

  • Arriving home — Lights on, heating up, blinds open, alarm disarmed
  • Leaving home — All lights off, heating to eco mode, blinds closed, alarm armed
  • Last person leaves — HomeKit can detect when the last family member leaves and trigger a comprehensive "away" scene
  • First person arrives — The house wakes up when the first family member comes home

Privacy by Design

One of the great things about HomeKit's geofencing is that it is processed entirely on your iPhone. Your location data is never sent to Apple's servers or shared with third parties. Combined with Thinka's local-first architecture, you get powerful location-based automation without compromising your privacy.

If you have not set up geofencing yet, it is one of the easiest ways to make your KNX home feel truly intelligent.
