HomeKit Adaptive Lighting: Bringing Circadian Rhythm to KNX Homes
Light That Follows Your Natural Rhythm
Apple introduced Adaptive Lighting as part of iOS 14, and it is one of the most impactful HomeKit features for daily comfort. The concept is simple but powerful: your lights automatically adjust their colour temperature throughout the day, from energising cool white in the morning to warm, relaxing tones in the evening.
This is not just about aesthetics — it is about health. Research has shown that exposure to blue-rich light in the evening can disrupt your circadian rhythm and affect sleep quality. Adaptive Lighting addresses this by gradually shifting to warmer tones as the sun sets.
Adaptive Lighting with Thinka and KNX
For KNX homeowners with tunable white lighting, Thinka brings Adaptive Lighting support to your entire installation. If your KNX system includes DALI or LED drivers that support colour temperature adjustment, Thinka can expose these as tunable white lights in HomeKit — making them eligible for Adaptive Lighting.
The beauty of this feature is that it is completely automatic. Once enabled in the Home app, your lights will follow the sun's natural cycle without any manual intervention. You can still override the colour temperature at any time, and the system will gracefully resume its adaptive behaviour.
Setting It Up
To use Adaptive Lighting with your KNX installation:
- Ensure your KNX lighting actuators support tunable white (colour temperature control)
- Configure the lights as "Lightbulb (Tunable White)" in your Thinka
- Open the Home app, long-press the light, and enable Adaptive Lighting
It is that simple. Your KNX home just got a little smarter — and a lot more comfortable.
